On The Bay

On The Bay

Sunday 14 april 2019

From Swakopmund, we drove back down to Walvis Bay, which, because it has deep water and accommodates big ships, the British held onto for a long time. We were told that “parking is cheap,” which accounts for the many ships in the bay. An oil rig was towed here, probably from Angola, for servicing. Namibia has no oil, at least none that can be exploited commercially.

Our excursion du jour was a catamaran trip out to see the marine wildlife. Although we saw and heard many many seals on a spit out near the lighthouse:

the big-wow animal of the trip was a new friend that we called Bumpy because of the injury to his beak, presumably aquired in a fight. He was our companion on board all the way out and back:

I probably shouldn’t be surprised, but I hadn’t expected to see any penguins in the water:

but there you are.
