Another Trip Begins

The last time we took a long trip was four years ago. We had a nice itinerary planned for a trip in 2020 but something viral happened to scuttle it. Now we restart that adventure, with exactly the same plan.

All long-distance travel starts for us at SFO. We knew we had departed from this gate on a previous trip, thanks to the memorable artwork. There’s plenty of interesting art at the airport, on both sides of the security-check boundary.

Hours and time zones later, we landed in Frankfurt. The airport is not as fancy as the international terminal at SFO, and I didn’t see anything worth recording for future viewing pleasure. We walked a lot, from the Z gates to the A gates, fortunately not in reverse order.

Then it was on to Geneva, a nice unmemorable flight ending with lots more walking through endless airport corridors to the baggage claim. Getting through customs on entry to Switzerland was nothing more than walking through the “nothing to declare” doorway.

We stopped at an ATM ro get some Swiss francs, found the train station in the airport, got on the train for Lausanne and wished it were air-conditioned. In the few minutes before the train started (right on time— this is Switzerland), lots of people came aboard. Lots of languages, lots of luggage.

After a 40-minute ride with a view of vineyards and Lake Geneva, we arrived in 90-degree Lausanne. The city is very vertical, rising up from the lake. One metro stop and a short walk uphill brought us to our hotel. Time for a shower!

On past trips, I have snapped some great street art – that is, fun stuff to see at my feet. We took a short walk for dinner and I decided to add this elegant sewer cover to my collection.

Not the most elegant way to end today’s post, but it’s too hot, and we’re too tired to do any more interesting sight-seeing.
